Ein guter Regisseur hätte es wohl nicht besser inszenieren können: Nach dem Konsolidierungsjahr und pünktlich zum zehnten Geburtstag werden die Baseballer des TV Bühl Meister und steigen von der Bezirks- in die Landesliga auf. Vielleicht war genau das die ideale Startvoraussetzung, die es den Blackwoods ermöglichte, so befreit aufzuspielen und dadurch den Titel zu holen. Geplant hatte den Coup wohl nicht einmal Manuel Moretti, Bühls Mr. Baseball höchstpersönlich.

Wie heißt es doch so schön? Wer nicht wagt, der nicht gewinnt. Die Blackwoods haben es gewagt, und das nach dem Motto „wir versuchen es und melden ein Team für die Liga“, berichtet Cheftrainer Ted Hirsch im Gespräch mit dieser Redaktion. Die Aufbruch- Stimmung war da, aber es galt aber auch vier neue Spieler zu integrieren, so Co-Trainer Stefan Letzin. Spirit und Blackwoods, das scheint so eine Kombi wie Schwarzwald und Fichte zu sein.

Ein Spieler reist sogar aus dem Raum Pirmasens an

Und dieser Spirit scheint inzwischen weite Kreise zu ziehen. Wie sonst lässt es sich erklären, dass das Team Verstärkung von Alex Hajduk erhält, einem US-Amerikaner, der im Raum Pirmasens lebt und jedes Mal zum Training rund 100 Kilometer hin und auch wieder zurückfährt. „Ein klasse Typ“, sagt Co-Trainer Letzin, und dazu äußerst Baseball-erfahren. Der Neuzugang der Saison 2024 spielte in den USA in einer Collegemannschaft.

Seinen Weg nach Bühl fand er über einen weiteren Neu-Blackwood, einen Deutschen, mit dem er befreundet ist. Natürlich liegt es nicht am Spirit allein. Der hilft beim Gewinnen, es gehört aber noch einiges mehr dazu. Übungsleiter zum Beispiel: Und da kommt Abteilungsleiter Moretti ins Schwärmen angesichts des Engagements und der Leistungen von Ted Hirsch als Headcoach und Stefan Letzin als Co-Trainer.

Überhaupt Stefan Letzin. Er kam als Quereinsteiger vom Handball und avancierte inzwischen, zusammen mit David Schnädelbach, zum Top-Pitcher (Werfer). Dazu ist der Ex-Handballer noch Schiedsrichter. Für den gebürtigen US-Amerikaner Ted Hirsch, die personifizierte Baseball-Intelligenz der Blackwoods, steht außer Frage, das Wichtigste in dieser Sportart sei das Pitching. „Das hat dem Team die starke Wettbewerbsfähigkeit gegeben“, so Hirsch weiter.

Trainingsbeteiligung in Saison 2024 war top

Es kommt aber noch mehr zusammen, was den Blackwoods Bühl den Titel und den Aufstieg brachte. Nach der einjährigen Auszeit, Manuel Moretti spricht von einer Konsolidierungsphase, brannte das Team geradezu auf Baseball. Die Trainingsbeteiligung sei super gewesen, freut sich Cheftrainer Hirsch, und für die Ligaspiele standen prinzipiell neun bis zehn Mann zur Verfügung. Das sorgt natürlich bei der Aufstellung für einen gewissen Komfort.

Doch zurück zum Spirit: Der ließ so manchen Spieler über sich hinaus wachsen. In einem Fall war es ein Neuzugang namens Günther Reichelt, der vorher mit Baseball nicht viel am Hut hatte. Er spielt als Outfielder, also auf einer der drei Defensivpositionen, die am weitesten vom Schlagmann (Batter) entfernt sind. Und im letzten Heimspiel der Runde am 21. September lief der „Freshman“ zur Höchstform auf.

Abteilungsversammlung sprach sich für Aufstieg aus

Gegen die starken Schwäbisch Hall Renegades gelangen Reichelt zwei Catches (sicheres Fangen und Halten des geschlagenen Balls), die auch gestandenen Spielern Worte höchster Anerkennung entlockten. Und nun? Der Aufstieg ist beschlossene Sache. Die Abteilungsversammlung hat grünes Licht gegeben. „Wir wollten alle mitnehme

Was für Bühls Mr. Baseball die Geschichte noch umso bemerkenswerter macht, ist die Tatsache, dass sein US-amerikanischer Lieblingsclub, die Los Angeles Dogders, gerade den Titel in der Major League Baseball (MLB) geholt haben. Passend zum Bühler Erfolg. Klar, von der Massenbegeisterung in den USA in Sachen Baseball ist Bühl natürlich noch weit entfernt. Aber es tut sich was. Vor allem der Kids Day mit der Aloys-Schreiber-Schule brachte wieder etwas Zulauf, berichtet Co-Trainer Letzin.

Hände in den Schoß legen, ist allerdings nicht drin: Die Fluktuation bei der Jugend ist nach wie vor hoch und dringend gesucht sind Spieler im Teenageralter. Immerhin kann das Jugendtraining der Blackwoods inzwischen in der City im Ludwig-Jahn-Stadion stattfinden. Aber das Wunschziel haben die Bühler Baseballer noch längst nicht erreicht.

Platz in Kernstadtnähe steht weiter ganz oben auf der Wunschliste

„Wir hoffen immer noch, dass wir eine geeignete Spielstätte im Kernstadt-Bereich bekommen“, sagt Moretti. Ins Auge gefasst haben die Blackwoods den Bolzplatz zwischen dem Schulzentrum in der Siemenstraße und dem Stadtteil Oberweier. „Wir stehen nach wie vor in Verhandlungen mit der Stadtverwaltung“, so Moretti.

Den Aufstieg in die Landesliga wertet er als gutes Argument für weitere Gespräche. Headcoach Ted Hirsch verdeutlicht den Erfolgsweg in einem Satz: „Als Manuel vor zehn Jahren mit Baseball in Bühl begann, war hier nichts“. Das hat sich geändert. Und Co-Trainer Letzin ist sich sicher, dass die Blackwoods Bühl in der Landesliga eine gute Rolle spielen werden.

Why the baseball players in Bühl even receive support from Pirmasens

It was a memorable season for the Blackwoods Bühl. In the tenth year of their existence, the baseball team caused a sensation.

A good director could not have staged it any better: After a year of consolidation and just in time for their tenth birthday, the TV Bühl baseball team become champions and are promoted from the district league to the national league. Perhaps this was the ideal starting point that allowed the Blackwoods to play so freely and win the title. Not even Manuel Moretti, Bühl’s Mr. Baseball himself, had planned the coup.

As the saying goes? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The Blackwoods took a chance, and did so under the motto “we’ll give it a go and enter a team for the league”, reports head coach Ted Hirsch in an interview with this editorial team. The spirit was there, but there were also four new players to integrate, according to assistant coach Stefan Letzin. Spirit and Blackwoods, that seems to be a combination like the Black Forest and spruce.

And this spirit seems to be spreading far and wide. How else can it be explained that the team has been strengthened by Alex Hajduk, an American who lives in the Pirmasens area and drives around 100 kilometers to and from training every time. “A great guy,” says co-coach Letzin, who is also extremely experienced in baseball. The new signing for the 2024 season played for a college team in the USA.

He found his way to Bühl via another New Blackwood, a German he is friends with. Of course, it’s not just the spirit alone. It helps to win, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Stefan Letzin in particular. He came from handball as a lateral entrant and, together with David Schnädelbach, has since become a top pitcher. The former handball player is also a referee. For US-born Ted Hirsch, the Blackwoods‘ baseball intelligence personified, there is no question that the most important thing in this sport is pitching. “That’s what has made the team so competitive,” continues Hirsch.

But there is more to it than that, which brought the Blackwoods Bühl the title and promotion. After the one-year break – Manuel Moretti refers to it as a consolidation phase – the team was really fired up for baseball. Head coach Hirsch is pleased to report that training participation was great and nine to ten players were always available for the league games. This naturally provides a certain level of comfort when it comes to the line-up.

But back to the spirit: it allowed many a player to surpass themselves. In one case, it was a newcomer named Günther Reichelt, who previously had little to do with baseball. He plays as an outfielder, one of the three defensive positions furthest away from the batter. And in the last home game of the round on September 21, the “freshman” was in top form.

Department meeting voted in favor of promotion

Against the strong Schwäbisch Hall Renegades, Reichelt made two catches (safely catching and holding the batted ball), which elicited words of appreciation even from seasoned players. And now? Promotion is a done deal. The department meeting has given the green light. “We wanted to take everyone with us,” says department head Moretti, explaining the procedure.

What makes the story all the more remarkable for Bühl’s Mr. Baseball is the fact that his favorite US club, the Los Angeles Dogders, have just won the Major League Baseball (MLB) title. Matching Bühler’s success. Of course, Bühl is still a long way from the mass enthusiasm for baseball in the USA. But things are happening. In particular, the Kids Day with the Aloys-Schreiber-Schule has brought in some new fans, reports co-coach Letzin.

However, it is not possible to sit back and relax: The turnover of youth players is still high and teenage players are urgently needed. At least the Blackwoods‘ youth training can now take place in the city at the Ludwig-Jahn Stadium. However, the Bühler baseball team is still a long way from achieving its desired goal.

“We are still hoping to find a suitable venue in the city center,” says Moretti. The Blackwoods have set their sights on the football pitch between the school center in Siemenstraße and the Oberweier district. “We are still in negotiations with the city council,” says Moretti.

He sees the promotion to the national league as a good argument for further talks.
